Parish Leadership Meeting: Supporting Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities Through Grief and Loss

Wed, 10/07/2026 - 2:00pm EDT to 3:30pm

Supporting Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities Through Grief and Loss

Individuals with intellectual disabilities experience grief and loss just as profoundly as anyone else, yet their needs are often overlooked or misunderstood. This presentation explores how grief may manifest in people with intellectual disabilities, common barriers to healthy mourning, and practical strategies for providing effective support. Participants will learn how to communicate about death and loss in accessible ways, recognize behavioral and emotional expressions of grief, promote inclusion in mourning rituals, and utilize person-centered interventions that foster healing and resilience. Through discussion, attendees will gain tools to better support individuals with intellectual disabilities as they navigate the grieving process.

Nanci Lukasik-Smith, M.A.P.S., C.P.S.D.

Director of Evangelization, Saint Clare of Assisi in Surprise, AZ

Nanci is a pastoral leader, educator, and advocate whose ministry focuses on fostering belonging, accessibility, and full participation for people with disabilities and their families in the life of the Church. Her work emphasizes pastoral accompaniment, leadership development, family support, and the promotion of human dignity through authentic belonging and participation in parish life.
