Third week in October each year.
Invisible Disabilities Awareness Week exists because persons with invisible disabilities are often judged more harshly and expected to do more than persons with visible disabilities who are often expected to do less than they are capable of doing. It stems from a lack of understanding that a disability you don't see can still have an immense impact on all aspects of a person's life. Tips Regarding Persons with Invisible Disabilities
- If a person tells you they have a disability, diagnosis, or condition that requires an accommodation, believe them.
- Invisible disabilities range in severity and many invisible disabilities impact a person's day differently over time. Accept that a person may require more accommodation some days than others.
- Disabilities are not something that persons "get over" or "cure" with a pill, whether visible or invisible.
- Persons with invisible disabilities might mask symptoms of their disability so that you don't see the impact.
Prayers of the Faithful
That every person with a disability, visible or invisible, have their needs met with understanding and compassion, not judgement.
