Disability, Human Dignity, and the Mission of the Church
In Fr. Dickson Terzungwe's words:
Disability is not merely a medical condition; it is also a matter of human dignity, justice, inclusion, and pastoral responsibility. My reflection is informed by my ministerial background in a war-affected area of Cameroon and my current ministry in the Appalachian region of Kentucky. Although these contexts differ, both remind me that a person’s experience of disability is shaped not only by an impairment but also by the support, opportunities, and barriers present in the surrounding community.
In conflict-affected settings, disability may intersect with injury, displacement, interrupted healthcare, and loss of community support. In rural Appalachia, some people may face transportation difficulties, geographic isolation, economic hardship, or limited access to specialized services. These realities call the Church to listen, accompany, and respond with compassion.
Open to diocesan AND parish leaders in Affiliate Dioceses!
Registration links will be sent to diocesan disability ministry leaders in Affiliate Dioceses one week prior to the event and we ask them to share the invitation with parish leaders.
