Introduction
Ten years ago the first edition of Opening Doors to People with Disabilities: Volume II appeared and was welcomed as a source of valuable and pertinent information and resources for the nation-wide network of the National Catholic Office for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD). We were all working together to create greater awareness and sensitivity to the need to build inclusion and welcome for people with assorted disabilities within the Catholic Church and community. For years I recognized that the materials collected in my battered looseleaf copy of that early publication had drawn from the best available resources at that time in our history.
But we cannot live in our contemporary society without recognizing that the times have changed drastically over this past decade. And, as chair of NCPD's board, working in collaboration with our staff, it became obvious we could not cut and paste appropriate answers to the evolving needs of a growing community of people with disabilities. Through the expanding opportunities provided by such secular vehicles as the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, we became witnesses to a dawning reality: this surging and emerging community of our brothers and sisters with disabilities have heightened expectations of not only their secular world but their local parishes and Catholic institutions as well. And so began the work of collection, analysis, selection, and preparation of fresh and relevant models, surveys, training materials, solutions, and seminal documents. The result is a 1,400 page encyclopedia of what we hope will provide solutions to the many challenges and questions you face in your mission of evangelization and accommodation.
This edition is provided in looseleaf form so that new sections can be added as we develop additional topics. This expandable format allows us to respond to your requests for further information and The Resource File can be used to incorporate your favorite documents, resulting in a single repository of information.
Finally, the board and staff of NCPD thank you for your interest and hope this revised edition of Opening Doors to People with Disabilities: The Resource File will serve you well as you work to remove barriers faced by those with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities as they seek to join in the circle of God's family on earth.
May God continue to bless you and our shared mission.
Sister Bernadette Downes, C.I.J. Chair of the Board of Directors National Catholic Office for Persons with Disabilities July, 1997

Opening Doors to People with Disabilities, Volume II—The Resource File
Purpose:
This second edition of Opening Doors to People with Disabilities, Volume II—The Resource File is a companion volume to the revised version of Volume I of Opening Doors published in 1995. The chapters of Volumes I and II correspond, with Volume II offering articles which expand on the themes presented in Volume I, as well as models, survey instruments, and forms to use in training or implementing programs. This encyclopedia of sources on access and welcome for people with disabilities is designed to aide pastors, diocesan staff, parish councils, seminarians, family members—anyone interested in expanding opportunities and building a truly inclusive body of Christ.
Format:
The Resource File is produced in two binders for ease in accessing documents and to allow for future expansion. The series of Table of Contents serve as an index to the volume. To begin your research for a specific topic, consult the complete Table of Contents located at the beginning of Book A. Tables of Contents are also printed on the tabbed dividers for each chapter and section. Each document is identified in the lower left-hand corner with its Table of Contents citation, and in the lower right-hand corner with page numbers corresponding only to that document (i.e., page 1 of 3).
Copyright Requirements:
The Resource File contains original works produced by NCPD, as well as reprints of documents from individuals and organizations throughout the country. While the volume in its entirety is copyrighted by NCPD, permission has been granted for many of the individual resources within it to be reprinted by our readers with appropriate citation. Each article or resource has a citation indicating whether it can be reprinted. Those stating All rights reserved may not be reproduced without obtaining permission from the original source. Please honor these copyright requirements.
Requesting Alternative Formats:
Every effort has been made to present text in standard 12 point type. In a few instances, particularly charts, a smaller print was necessary. For people who do not use traditional print, copies of The Resource File are available on diskette (Wordperfect 5.1) on a request basis to produce the publication in braille or large print, or access it directly through a computer. Cassette tape copies are also available. The cost for these formats will be the same as the print version.
