Pioneer in Deaf and Disability Ministry Passes Reverend David Walsh, C.Ss.R. passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2005 . Fr. Walsh worked with the International Catholic Deaf Association (ICDA), was the first executive director of the National Catholic Office of the Deaf (NCOD), and was a founding board member of NCPD. His entire life was devoted to working with and advancing the rights of people who were deaf or disabled. New Resource from the Diocese of Lansing Joann Davis , director of Ministry with Persons with Disabilities in the Diocese of Lansing has just published an excellent activity book entitled disAbility Awareness Activities for Children, Teens and Families. The activity book includes over 50 pages of mazes, puzzles, coloring sheets, saints with disabilities, facts and information, a prayer service, and more. Video Available from the Diocese of Sioux City The Coalition for Ministry with Persons Having Disabilities of the Diocese of Sioux City has produced a beautiful video entitled By My Side, the Life of Carrie Mach, about a young high school student who touched many lives as she battled with cancer. Feeling that Carrie’s story needed to be told, the Coalition produced the video and an accompanying discussion guide, and distributed it to every Catholic parish and school in the diocese. Recommended Resources for Interpreters and Deaf Ministry Susan Perrault , Consultant for Ministry with Persons with Disabilities in the Diocese of Green Bay recommends two resources of interest for Catholic Church Interpreters: Looking for helpful commentaries for the weekly readings and gospels? The new Year/Cycle B begins November 27 th. Liturgy Training Publicationsfeatures an assortment of books full of background information, tips, and ideas for effective proclamation. For instance, follow this link for a helpful resource which Catholic parishes often order in bulk for quantity discounts: Workbook for Lectors and Gospel Readers (US Edition). For more information, check with the staff at the parish where you interpret and/or worship.

NCPD Summer Institute in New Orleans a Success NCPD’s second Summer Institute, Come to the Water, held in New Orleans from June 8-11, was a rousing success. Special thanks go to Paula D’Albor-Stuckart, Director of the Archdiocesan Family Life Office, Lynnette Bartley, and the Archdiocesan Commission for Persons with Disabilities for their gracious hospitality and months of behind the scenes preparations. Over 125 people attended, representing nearly 50 dioceses and organizations. Kitty Kruse, a former diocesan disability director from the Diocese of Toledo, board member of the National Apostolate for Inclusion Ministry, and parent, was honored for her forty years of dedicated service. NCPD’s first executive director, Sr. Rita Baum, was also honored for her significant contribution in establishing NCPD, and nurturing it through its first nine years. Vera Ludwig of the Diocese of Sioux City was recognized as the newest diocesan staff member in disability ministry. NCPD Awarded Generous Grant from the USCCB Committee on Home Missions The Committee on Home Missions of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has awarded NCPD a grant of $20,000 to develop and disseminate an Access Manual for Catholic Facilities. The manual will include guidelines for creating access in Churches and other Catholic facilities, with architectural drawings, and photos of exemplary access modifications. Additional issues to be addressed in the manual include guidelines for the distribution of the Eucharist for Catholics with Celiac disease, and considerations for people living with multiple chemical sensitivities. NCPD is seeking digital photos of examples of exemplary or problematic access to Churches (including sanctuaries). Submit photos for consideration to jbenton@ncpd.org. NCPD 2005-2006 Affiliate Members Continue Their Support of NCPD To date, 42 dioceses have renewed their support of NCPD through their annual Affiliate Membership contribution. NCPD Partnering with Newly Formed Catholic Celiac Society NCPD is working with the Catholic Celiac Society to promote information on the Church’s guidelines regarding the reception of the Eucharist for Catholics with Celiac disease. Mark your Calendar for the Annual Social Justice Gathering NCPD is once again co-sponsoring the annual national gathering of Catholic Social Justice Directors. The upcoming meeting will be held Sunday, February 12 through Wednesday, February 15 in Washington , D.C. NCPD will be hosting a pre-meeting for conference participants on February 12 to discuss the disability perspective of the social justice issues to be addressed at the full gathering. Please join us for this opportunity to raise the social justice concerns of the disability community on such important issues as social security reform, housing, and employment. Further details will follow in future E-NEWS.
Comments on the IDEA Regulations Due September 6, 2005 The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was reauthorized in December 2004. P roposed regulations to implement IDEA 2004 were published June 21, 2005 in the Federal Register. For a copy of these regulations and the comments submitted by the USCCB Education Office, visit the following link on NCPD’s web site: http://www.ncpd.org/IDEAcomments.htm. Public hearings were held throughout the country. The deadline for written comments is September 6, 2005 .
